Our Story

The aim of the Curry Council (CC) is to visit ever Indian Restaurant in the borough of Stockport and the surrounding area’s of the North West. We aim to publish a fair and accurate review of the experience.

The true legend of the CC has never been told………..until now.

In the mid 1990’s, the core members of the CC came together. The delicate taste buds of the CC members were still forming as they reached their late teens.

Copious amounts of watered down Fosters lager, at the local night club (the late, great Coco Savanna’s), were a regular occurrence.

These evenings were often finished with a greasy kebab at Coco Kebanna’s.

The taste of luke warm doner meat and stale pitta bread became too much for the boys. An unknown member of the then unformed CC came up with the idea of visiting the nearest curry house at the time (Imran’s Indian Restaurant in Stockport Town Centre).

Many tales of late night curry visits could be told. Madras (or Mad-ass, as it was proudly known) was never to blame for the dicky tummy the next day (it must have been the lager).

The rising number of missing cats in the Stockport area was never really correlated to the ever increasing number of customers at Mr Imran’s (as he was fondly known).

Legend has it that Day, Marchbank-Smith and Noble visited the said establishment each and every Saturday for a consecutive ring stinging 32 weeks.

The next stage in the development of CC is clouded in doubt and controversy.

The ‘Bengal Dynasty’ (photo below) in Offerton became a popular establishment with the lads.

The ‘Garam Massala’ on Buxton Road (Heaviley) also became a regular eating establisment (the restaurant was later named as the ‘Light of Asia’, then known as the 'Everest' and is now currently named the ‘Kismet’).

Stories will be told of which of these two establishments was the 'Holy Grail’ that started the legend that is now the Curry Club.

The thirst for Cobra lager and hunger for the fiery spices of indian food became a weekly ritual.

Visits to the Royal Naz, Mister Khan's and Shia Khan’s on Manchester's famous Rusholme Curry Mile also ensued.

As night turns into day and as the leaves fall from the trees, the monthly lad’s curry night is now firmly written in stone.

The taste buds of the CC have grown to embrace the delicate flavours and fiery spices of our favourite Indian food.

In 2005, the official monthly curry timetable was introduced. Each and every curry Jedi* takes his turn to arrange a curry at the venue of his choice.

(* The curry ‘Jedi’ is the sacred name given to the more distinguished curry eater. ‘Padawan’ and 'youngling’ are the names given to our trainee Curry Council Members)

currycouncil.com was launched in late 2007. A professional approach is now adopted by all Curry Council members to provide a unique "Indian News and Reviews" service for the curry eating community.

Our website aims to give you the "whole truth and Naanthin but the truth" about Indian Restaurants in Stockport and the North West of England.
