The Indian Ocean - Ashton

T 0161 343 3343

A Stamford Street East, Ashton-under-Lyne, OL6 6QH

The Curry Council set off on their long journey from Stockport to Ashton-under-Lyne. This month it was Paul Day's turn to organise the curry and also choose the location.

The Indian Ocean was the venue of choice for Mr Day. The exiled Stopfordian is now a fully fledged Tameside inhabitant and not surprisingly supports Manchester City, has a slight limp and sports a mullet along with a nice tash to match. The restaurant is conveniently located close to his new Ashton based home.

The "Rat" Day provided some very dubious directions to the the Indian Ocean and caused much confusion for members after leaving the M60.

It was the Rodent's fifth attempt at organising the November curry, with it ending up being a week late and in the first week of December.

Founded in 1993, the Indian Ocean is rated as one of Tameside's premier Indian Restaurant's and came highly recommended. The restaurant was named the region's finest curry house at the 2007 British Curry Awards and also boasts an impressive website.

We arrived at an impressive looking building next to a church, with very adequate car parking facilities.

The CurryCouncil were taken to a large and spacious open bar area upon arrival and were offered drinks whilst waiting for the remainder of our group to arrive (who were circling the nearby roundabout thanks to Mr Day and his directions).

Cool pints of draught Cobra were promptly served (at a reasonable £2.60) and small bottles of Cobra were also available.

We were then seated at an open table. The restaurant offers a mix of both luxurious private booths and open seating. The interior design has a vibrant, yet stylish mix of colours and textures.

Poppodums were served whilst we slowly deliberated over the large array of meal choices. The Indian Ocean offers a wide and varied menu, ranging from traditionally prepared Indian, Kashmiri and Punjabi cuisine.

The starters offered were all of a good standard. The lamb and chicken Harri Boti (priced at £3 each) was enjoyed by two members of our party. Both starters came marinated in a yoghurt dressing flavoured with lemon, garlic and a nice fusion of herbs and chillies.

A highly unusual "Onion Bhaji" naan bread was available to select from the menu. The thought of combining these two all-time classic Indian dishes had the Council licking their lips. The naan proved to be very tasty and was priced at a reasonable £2.

A varied selection of main courses were eaten and thoroughly enjoyed. The Chicken Tikka Jalfrezi can be recommended. The main courses range in price from £6 up to £12*.

Overall - the Indian Ocean offers a pleasant Indian dining experience in a clean and modern environment. The food delivered was of a high standard and the service also good, with the friendly waiters even providing a helping hand with our photos (below).
