Indian chain Akbar's to expand into the Midlands

Yorkshire-based Indian restaurant chain Akbar's is set to expand into the Midlands, with the opening of a new outlet in Birmingham next month.

The company, which currently operates nine restaurants throughout the North of England in Leeds, Manchester, York, Sheffield and Middlesbrough, will launch the new restaurant on 24 September.

The 300-seat restaurant in Edgbaston will include a private function suite catering for up to 200 guests.

Shabir Hussain, managing director at Akbar's, said he was excited about the group’s expansion into Birmingham.

“The city already has an excellent reputation for Asian cuisine so we are looking forward to offering our particular style of food and service within such a vibrant restaurant scene,” he said.

  1. Review on Akbar's, Birmingham:

I was looking forward to visiting the new restaurant and so my boyfriend and I went along on a Saturday evening.

We took our beeper and waited on one of the faux leather chairs for 20 mins for a table and were seated in a dark corner at the back of the restaurant.

We waited another 15 mins before being asked if we wanted poppadoms, to which I asked to have a drinks order taken first. The waiter refused saying he is only asking if we would like to order poppadoms and that a different waiter will take our drinks order.

The poppadoms arrived, and so we asked again if we could order drinks - to much of the annoyance of the non-drinks-ordering-waiter.

We asked the price of the wine per glass (as not provided on the menu) and was told £2.25. We accepted and order bottle of beer, only small ones available, and glass of red wine.

The poppadoms were cold and the tray of sauces looked like it was taken from another table with dirty spoons, plus we had asked for a jug of water also, so please bring it.

Warmer poppadoms arrived with 'new' sauces witha jug of water - we then had to separately ask for two glasses FOR the water.

Okay so we then order our main meals.
We shared a large nan, which looked impressive on the 'rack' but it was freezing!!

We called the waiter over to explain, my boyfriend event told him to touch it to see for himself as he looked hassled - which he did. When leaving with the rack of nan, he skipped back to ask if we would want to hold onto the nan (which he had just grabbed!!!) until the next one came.

No. How would they expect us to do such a thing!!???

So a fresh hot nan arrived in a quick time and we had a few mouthfulls when suddenly the large group of people near to us in a booth had one of their guests throw up on the floor underneath the table. Their table thought it was hilarious whilst her partner held back her hair and kept drinking.

A flood of waiters arrived, to which we asked them to pack up our food and give us the bill as we could not stand being near vomit.

They didn't even ask if we wanted to be re-sat somewhere else or apologised for the sight. They went off with our dishes and they gave them to us in boxed tuberware.

We then stood at the till for 15mins - no queue, just standing there waiting for the bill. So we bagan to walk out when they rushed over with the bill - FINALLY!!!

The wine was priced at £3.25. We called the manager over to explain we had been told a differnet price and in light of everything that happened we stand by the priniciple and not pay an extra penny.

When my boyfriend paid with his card, the PDQ machine printed out two Card Denied receipts and VOID receipts also. I then paid on my card which went through.

Upon leaving the restaurant, my boyfriend called his bank to see why his card had been declined AND IT HADNT. The payment went through.

We had just paid twice for the rubbish service food and ambience of an over hyped restaurant.

We quickly spoke to the manager on the telephone who said 'Oh just come back and we will refund you.' We came back in good faith, only to ask where our bank statement was.

Bank statement on Saturday midnight??!! HOW??!!
After much discussion, they refused to call their own bank and find out if payment had went through.

We were promised a phone call first thing Monday morning as he would then find out from their accounts.

No phone call came. Tuesday evening, could we speak to the manager? No. He is busy. Leave a message and he will return your call.

    Well, he didn't.
Same thing happened Wednesday and Thursday.
The next week, my boyfriend found a payment into his account from Akbar's for the price.

What about sorry? Sorry for treating you like a liar? Sorry for the hassle?

No. Over hyped, disappointing, awful service, cold and second hand food with a waft of vomit.

    Please don't waste your time.

    Tara, Birmingham.

  3. i agree with the above review , your better off having a takeaway and the service and food would be so much better.this restaurant is hyped up and they dont care about service. we got charged fro so many extra and had the bill sent back twice and even then they didnt get it right. in the end we added up the total to what we think the bill was and payed them, and no they didnt get a tip. this restaurant gives a abd name to all the reputible places to eat in brum. Im very dissapointed. when i called shabir hussain to complain he said it was his day off and to email from the website. when you go on the website thier is nowhere to complain. I did send an email to shabbir hussain and its been over amonth and me and my friends are waiting for a reply and an aplogy for the atttitude and rubbish food we were sereve, not to mention they sat us in the bar area and served us their, appaling and pathetic. the akbars in leeds are on a different level to this place. shame on you
